The debate over basing the F-35A at Burlington International Airport has exposed a variety of fault lines in Chittenden County.

The debate pits the heavyweights of the political establishment, the Vermont Air National Guard and some residents supportive of the military’s priorities against a less well-organized coalition that includes some anti-militarists and many individuals fearful that the Pentagon’s latest warplane will blanket neighborhoods near the airport with unpleasant noise.

The most recent report on the impact of noise — issued by the Greater Burlington Industrial Corporation — said it found no relationship in recent years between airport activity and home values around Burlington’s airport. That conclusion, however, was quickly challenged locally, including by some local real-estate agents.
